Annuities inside IRAs

An IRA can be an account or an individual retirement annuity. When IRA money purchases an annuity, the IRA rules remain central. The contract can change guarantees and payment mechanics, but it does not create a second tax shelter.

This guide provides general education. It does not calculate your taxable amount or replace advice based on your contract, account, records, and filing facts.

The IRA supplies the tax wrapper

Traditional IRA earnings and gains generally are not taxed until distribution. Roth IRA qualified distributions can be tax-free when the requirements are met. Those results come from the IRA rules, not from an annuity feature.

An annuity held in the IRA therefore should be evaluated for its contract terms and role, not for an assertion that it adds tax deferral the IRA lacks.

Basis belongs to the IRA framework

If a traditional IRA owner made nondeductible contributions, Form 8606 tracks basis across the owner’s traditional IRAs. Buying an annuity inside one IRA does not ordinarily isolate that basis in the contract.

Distributions are reported under IRA rules. A personally purchased non-qualified annuity’s exclusion-ratio explanation should not be transplanted into an IRA calculation without confirming that it applies.

RMD and liquidity questions remain

Traditional IRA RMD rules can apply even when value is held in an annuity. Publication 590-B describes special coordination rules for annuity payments and remaining account balances.

A contract’s payment limits, surrender terms, and valuation process can affect how an owner meets distribution needs. Those are contract facts, not tax conclusions, and should be confirmed in the actual contract.

A mechanics-first checklist

Before a transaction, identify the legal owner, tax arrangement, source of funds, distribution options, beneficiary terms, and how the custodian will report it.

  • Confirm whether the IRA is traditional or Roth.
  • Locate any Form 8606 basis history.
  • Ask how the contract supports required distributions and how its year-end value is reported.
  • Separate tax mechanics from product suitability or investment advice.
